What to prefer: dubbing or voiceover

Any genre of art, influencing the imagination and feelings of people, encourages them to experience unexpected emotions or leads to new thoughts. Cinema is a special kind of art that has at its disposal both visual and sound means for shaping the moods, tastes and convictions of all mankind. This is facilitated by the rapid distribution of films, the duplication of which makes perception accessible.

Features of dubbing and voice-over translation
In view of the fact that a film is a work of art, the task of those who undertook to convey the work of foreign masters to their compatriots is not to distort the authors’ intention, through language to convey the style and culture of the shown era of a foreign country. The specialist in charge of video translation must solve several important tasks:

have a solid knowledge of the culture of the language of the country of the film being translated;
take into account the peculiarities of the language before adapting the translation;
do not transfer the construction of foreign phrases to the translation text;
analyze the non-verbal information of the film and include it in the translation;
measure the length of the translated phrase with the original;
“Fold text”
There are several types of video translations, of which dubbing and voice-over translation are often used.

The task of dubbing is to create the impression that the characters of the film speak the native language of the viewer. For this, the scale of the original is removed completely, a group of actors is involved to perform the dubbing. But at the same time, part of the text can be lost or distorted.

Voiceover translation is designed to fully convey meaning, without removing information. At the same time, the speech of the heroes of the translated film is audible, an almost literal translation voiced by one or several actors is superimposed on it. This type of dubbing is convenient for the translator, he has the right to use phrases of the required length.

The choice of translation method depends on its purpose. If you want to convey as much information as possible, to enable viewers who know the original language to make sure the translation is correct, then voice-over translation should be preferred. If you need a different effect – dubbing.
